A real address in a trade that lost its own.

My first business venture wasn’t a lemonade stand. I grew up in a small-town Alberta family business that sold appliances, repaired televisions and delivered goods. At an age when most kids were saving for something small, I used a hundred-dollar Canada Savings Bond as collateral to buy Holstein bull calves and raise them from pail to feeder size.

I learned to see value where the market had decided there wasn’t any. And I learned that showing up, every day, with patience and care, was the only business model that actually held.

Fifty-plus years later I’m still in appliance service. Early in my career I was part of the group that advocated for appliance service to be recognized as a regulated trade in Alberta. I’ve consulted with provincial and federal bodies as a subject-matter expert for the Red Seal exam, and I still push for a national standard that combines education, experience and proper tooling.
