The short answer
EC 50 is a run-time error: the control has detected the unit running more than it should. A dirty condenser is the most common cause, so clean it first, then watch the temperatures.
EC 50 is a run-time error. The electronic control has detected that the unit is running more than it should.
One thing that makes a unit inefficient and run too much is a dirty condenser. Condenser cleaning should be done regularly; in Calgary and area, we recommend at least once a year. Cleaning instructions are in the use and care manual that came with your refrigerator, or a factory-certified servicer can clean it for you.
What to do if EC 50 is displayed
- Clean the condenser, especially if a second code, EC 40, is also showing.
- Monitor the fridge and freezer temperatures.
- If the condenser is clean and temperatures are at or close to normal, turn the unit off, wait a minute, and turn it back on. The EC code will go away, and a steady service message appears in the top centre of the display, replacing the flashing one. That means the code has been stored, not erased. A factory-certified servicer can erase stored codes.
- If the EC code comes back, call your factory-certified servicer for diagnosis.
